‘Curriculum Is Everything That Happens’: An Interview with Veteran Teacher Rita Tenorio
Tenori speaks about the implications new teachers face when entering the ‘real’ classroom and sates how, “you can’t be thinking that your classroom is a safe little place that’s separated from the rest of the world” (164). New teachers must realize that society and outside forces influence the productivity of the school. Teachers must invite stories from all students in the classroom instead of focusing on the students who are already accumulated in the school’s culture. All teachers need to find their own ways to ‘go beyond what is scripted’ in the curriculum because ‘curriculum is everything that happens’. As a new teacher, establishing beliefs and priorities through building a personal network is essential to expanding social justice in the classroom.
